Word is a component of Microsoft Office. Of course it’s not free. They come with a trial version sometimes then they expect you to buy it if you like it.

It’s very expensive. But there is a free alternative:

It is almost the same as Word, but free.

The cost depends on the version of the software you wish to purchase. Installation instructions will be included in your purchase.

you can either buy it as microsoft office(that come with powerpoint and Excel to.) or separately from microsoft.com. and yes it costs money but, if you download open office you get programs that are almost copies of word, Excel, powerpoint, and paint for free!!

OpenOffice.org is the same thing as “word”…it has its own extension (ODF.) but you can “save as” use the drop down box and select ‘microsoft word” that way anyone can read it if you send the word doc. to someone.

Here are some of your options for paying less than full price for Microsoft Office 2007:

First, if you’re a student, you may qualify for the Ultimate Steal edition of Office at a pretty good price ($59.95):

http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx

Second, if you’re interested in buying just Word, check out this URL, especially the second group of listings.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/FX101754511033.aspx

Note that the higher of the two prices quoted is for a full version of that program and the lower, for upgrades from existing software. Read the list of upgrade-qualifying software carefully: MS Works is often one, and may have come on your machine.

Finally, if you’re willing to spend a little to save a little, Microsoft Works is available in stores for about $40.00. You could buy a copy, install it, then buy Office at the upgrade level. I think you’d come out ahead. Note that the upgrade copy probably checks your machine for Works’ presence, so don’t get rid of it after you’ve installed Office. You never know when you’re going to have to reinstall Office.

Hope that helps.

You should rather have a look at SSuite Office for a free word processor. It has almost all the features of Word, and looks and works the same. {except for the ribbons}. Their word processor is called WordGraph.

It is only 12 MB in size. Nice and small :) . Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source software, so it makes their software very small and efficient.

Hi There,

You can download and use Office 2010 Beta for free until October 2010. Beta is a version that has not yet been publicly released; so essentially you get to try all the great features before it is available for purchase. Also, with the Microsoft Office Technology Guarantee if you purchase Office 2007 between now and September 2010, you get a free upgrade to Office 2010 when it is available in your area. The official information is here, http://www.office.com/techg.

Cheers,

You can download genuine, not pirated Microsoft Office 2010 beta for free (the whole suite of software with nothing left out). The earliest you can purchase the release to market version will be June 2010. You can enjoy using the beta until October 2010.

Microsoft now has a free version of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote on line at Skydrive. There’s nothing to install. You use the Skydrive version of Microsoft Office from any computer – Mac, PC, or even LINUX – in your FireFox, Safari or IE web browser. Your Office files are accessible from any computer with an internet connection, and you can print & save them locally, too. This link gives instructions on how to get SkyDrive. Then you can brag to your friends that you are doing “cloud computing.” You can even allow others to access your online documents.
