First of all, do NOT include your Social Security Number on a resume. Ever!

Since it sounds as though you are just starting out in your field, start your resume with your contact information:

Name
Address
City, State, Zip code
Phone and e-mail address

Next comes your OBJECTIVE. State what you wish to accomplish. For example: I am seeking an entry level position in a beauty salon or cosmetology department where I can utilize and expand upon my recently acquired skills.

Next comes EDUCATION. This is where you should list where you attended cosmetology school and cite specific classes you have taken or certifications you have received. This is particularly important, especially if you have no practical work experience to offer.

Right beneath this, I would list what you gained from attending this school. For example: Learned how to perform COSMETOLOGY SKILL while working with a diverse clientele. Mention things like “working under pressure,” “taking direction from instructors” and “dealing with diverse groups of customers in a fast-paced environment.” This wil show your potential employer that you understand the industry you are about to become involved in.

Once you have listed all your Cosmetology related courses, list any relevant job experience you may have. Be sure to list any jobs where you have either worked with other people or dealt with several co-workers, as people skills are very important in your future line of work.

Next, list relevant JOB SKILLS. These should be different than your cosmetology skills. These would include things like: Work well with Customers and Clients. Excellent Communication Skills. Fluent in Spanish. Proficient in Microsoft Office. The more skills you have to offer, the more desirable you will be to a prospective employer.

Next, list any other EDUCATION you have received, whether it be high school or college.

Finally, list the names and phone numbers of any REFERENCES you may have. Be sure to ask their permission first! This might include the names of instructors you had at Cosmetology school or even the name of satisfied clients.

If you want to send me your resume when you are done, I will be happy to take a look at it for you. Feel free to leave off your name and contact information. :-)

Good luck.

Go to MS Office online they have several downloadable templates. You do not need or want to include your SSN or cosmo license# until you have the job, especially if you plan to post online.
